Imran Khan was shifted from Attock Jail to Adiala Jail on August 29, 2023. This was in accordance with the orders of the Islamabad High Court, which had directed the government to transfer him to Adiala Jail, as it is the designated jail for under-trial prisoners from Islamabad.

Khan had been imprisoned in Attock Jail since August 5, 2023, after he was convicted in the Toshakhana case. However, his sentence in the case was suspended by the IHC on August 29. Despite the suspension of his sentence, Khan was not released from prison, as he was arrested by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on the same day in connection with alleged illegal possession and use of a diplomatic cypher.

Khan's lawyers had petitioned the IHC to transfer him to Adiala Jail, arguing that it was closer to his family and that he would have better access to medical facilities there. The IHC accepted their plea and directed the government to transfer him to Adiala Jail.

Khan was transferred to Adiala Jail under tight security. He has been placed in a room with attached bath and other facilities, as admissible under the prison rules for a former prime minister.
